Today in class (day 54)

Today in class we shared our presentations with everyone and we peer evaluated. This meant that we gave each other grades depending on they did. There were requirements that we had to reach though. Such as we had to persuasive and have an advertisement and a slogan. Most groups did a poster as an advertisement, which was the easiest way to do one. Our slogan was "Buy from around the world" and we had our 3 car types (BMW, Volkswagen, and Mercedes Benz) around the world. Our presentation included the prices of cars from the car companies. Then I added information about the benefits of buying from foreign companies and how it would lower the price for many American sold products and have a better outcome overall. I included facts about how Germany companies make cars a lot faster and that will lower the cost of some cars. If they were entirely made in the United States it would be too expensive, making transportation hard for middle and lower class citizens.

Today in class (day 53)

Today in class we went back into our groups to work on our projects and see what we can do. I did the presentation and looked everything up. I looked up car prices for 3 different types of cars. The types of cars are BMW, Volkswagen, and Mercedes Benz. We found out that the Volkswagen is the least expensive of all the 3 different car brands. They sell things cheaply but they are still made for luxury. The Volkswagen company builds Beetles (my favorite car)!  We had to finish our projects by the end of class today because we are supposed to present on Wednesday (which is 12-12-12) I am excited for the 12th of December in 2 thousand and 12. It shall be a magical day! In my group we made a poster to explain why people should buy products foreign instead of American. I made about 8 slides in class today which was enough to get all of the information I needed.

Today in class (day 52)

Today in class we continued to work on our projects that is worth 100 points. We will be ready to present on Wednesday. My group is doing our project on BMW, Mercedes Benz, and Volkswagen. We first searched up the prices to see how much they were. We did this because we have to work ours on cheap foreign labor. This means that the cars are made over in other countries such as China or Germany and made cheaper with cheaper labor and they are shipped over to the United States. They are made in other counties because if they were made in the United States they would be too expensive for middle class citizens to purchase them. Since no one would buy the products, the business would close down. Cars are expensive even being made in other countries. If they were made in the United States no one in the U.S would own a car because it would be too expensive to own on. We would ride bikes to work just like the Chinese did before cars were around in China. It is a wonder what cheap labor does for the United States.

Today in class (day 51)

Today in class we were watching part three of the peoples republic of capitalism video. It was very interesting and i learned a lot of new info from it. I learned that in China a lot of traffic and car accidents happen each day. This is because more and more people in China are starting to own cars for the first time. People in the United States usually own their first car or are able to drive a car by the time they are about eight teen and the people in China are just learning how to drive a car in their thirties or forties. The problem with this is they do not have a lot of experience and they do not know what they are doing. Also, at the rate at which China is putting cars on the road daily, if this continues to increase, then they will have more cars on their roads in the near future then the United States total. Also, the movie taught about the importance of buying US products versus Chinese. Then Mr. Schick told us about the project we were going to be doing which is either influencing the citizens of the United States to buy from the US companies or to buy cheaper from foreign or Chinese companies for less money.

Today in class (day 50)

Today in class instead of watching the video "The People's Republic of Capitalism" we looked up definitions of the words: capitalism, communism, free enterprise, and free market. Capitalism means an economic and political system in which a country's trade and industry are controlled by private owners for profit. That means when someone starts a business THEY own it, not the government. Communism means a theory or system of social organization based on the holding of all property in common, actual ownership being ascribed to the community as a whole or to the state. That means that the government owns the business and is the opposite of capitalism. China had their government as a communism.  This type of theory is classless. That means that there are no upper, middle, or lower class. Free enterprise means an economic system in which the means of production and distribution are privately owned and operated for a private use. Lastly free market means an economic system in which prices are determined by unrestricted competition between privately owned businesses.

Today in class (day 49)

Today in class we continued to watch the third part of the video "The Peoples Republic of Capitalism". It continued to talk about how people take others ideas and use them as their own. Such as people take engineering skills and use them as their own. It is a potion of plagiarism, in a way. It is the idea of taking someones idea and using it as your own. It is stealing the ideas of others, which is wrong. If someone does not take your idea, they are going to take someone else's idea. Later in the video it explains how workers in America are started to be paid less because of their company being taken over by Chinese leaders. One man  was making 28 dollars an hour, after he his company was taken over by Chinese leaders he later made 15 dollars an hour. It is shocking that even when a company is under Chinese rule, the workers still make less. The whole point of paying the leaders less is to lower the cost of the cost of the final product so that it is less expensive for the consumer. It is sad because the workers make less and can barley afford their house.

Today in class (day 48)

Today in class we watched a different part of the People's Republic of Capitalism. This part was mainly about automobiles and how new it was new to China.  Before the cars came to China, everyone rode bikes around to get to work, their houses, and even to buy food. Since cars have not been around very long in China, not that  many people know how to drive. People in their 30s, 40s, and 50s are just learning how to drive. Many accidents occur in China because of this, even 100 per day. Also many people in China can not afford a car because most of them are so poor. The only thing many Chinese people save up for is a car, so that it is easier to get around places and be more independent and not rely on  buses. Many farm workers have to haul their items to a bus stop and take it to town. It is very difficult for them because the items are very heavy and hurt their arms. They also make very low money so it will take them awhile to save up for a car.

Today in class (day 47)

Today in class we continued to watch the video called "The people's republic of capitalism" It was interesting to see how China and America's relationship is so well. Considering that there could be a dispute between America and China , what would happen then? Would China destroy all of their American businesses? Would America want their businesses out of China? It would ruin many things if anything had happened between China and America. One thing it would destroy is the cost of American prices. They would cost so much more and make Americans have to work more hours and do many more things just to purchase the items that they desire. By the cost of items being higher, that would mean that not many people would purchase them. That would also mean that the businesses would end up going out of business because no one would purchase their items. It would be a good idea that China and America stay great allies.

Today in class (day 46)

Today in class we continued to watch the video "The People's Republic of Capitalism". We continued to watch how companies move their American company to another country, such as China, to sell their products lower. Why are they lower? They are lower because China does not have a law like we do in the United States. We have a law of minimum wage so that everyone has a chance to earn equal money. In China though, labor is very cheap as low as 2 dollars A DAY. Companies move to China to pay for labor more cheaply and sell things at lower prices. Walmart is a big company that deals with "low prices". One way they do this is, is by getting products from companies that are in China. On Apple labels, it always says "Designed in California". It never says WHERE it was made, but only where it was designed. Most likely their products are made in China so that it is not as expensive as it would be if it was made in the United States.

Today in class (day 45)

Today in class we continued to watch the video and learn more about how Chinese workers work for more hours but less money. I feel that this is inhumane for a human being to work their butts off for at least 8 to 10 hours a day and get only 5 dollars a day. Sometimes even less than that. Such as construction workers make that are female make 2 to 3 dollars a day and male construction workers make at least 3 to 4 dollars a day. While in america you would at least earn 7 to 8 dollars AN HOUR. Your nationality or country should change the way you get paid or make a living. Most people in China rather do what they have a passion for than do construction or assemble things on an assembly line. The workers end up falling asleep from exhaustion because it is just so boring and it will make you "zombie like". In my opinion, I think that China should make a law; similar to the United States, of minimum wage. So the workers will get a chance to make a living and not barley get by.

Today in class (day 44)

Today in class we took notes on a video we took today. It was about China and it's difference compared to the United States. One thing is that is different is that China is only allowed to have 1 kid per family. Sometimes when the family finds out about the child's sex and it is a girl they get an abortion. Boys are more cherished over in China compared to the United States where it is equal. When a family owns a family company they pass it on to the boy, not the girl in the family. That is one of the reasons that having a boy is a bigger deal over in China. It is also becoming a problem though because there are not enough girls to marry the other boys to start a family themselves. Another problem with having one child per family is that if the child dies at a young age, they do not have another child to depend on. Also some of the parents are too old to have another child so then they can't raise a child and are left childless. That is what happened to some family's when an earthquake hit their major city and left kids dead.

Today in class (day 42)

Today in class we took a test on the world leaders. It was about where the leaders ruled their country, some facts about them, and others we had to figure out where they ruled on a map. I feel like I did better on this test than I did on the others because I actually studied. It was so much easier and I am thankful to have a mother who loves me enough to study with me. In the middle of my studying I was watching a movie about a mermaid who falls in love. I got really into it, that while it came back on, I told my mommy to stop studying with me so I could watch it. It was a really cute movie too, and the sad part it a mermaid has a better love life than I do. I really wish a hot surfer guy would fall in love with me even though I had a tail. It really upsets me because not even the unattractive guys look at me. WHAT IS THIS. I'M TOO GOOD FOR ALL OF THEM. I'M A HOT POT OF RICE WHO DON'T NEED NO SIDE DISH!

Today in class (day 41)

Today in class we went over the paper and learned more about what we were supposed to do. I did my paper over this weekend and I learned more about Israel and Saudi Arabia. I did my paper with Maria Cosentino, and it was really hard. The reason it was hard is because we kept getting distracted. We got distracted because we were also on Facebook and Tumblr. Then we would try to make food and got even more sidetracked. It took us at least a few hours to get started on the paper. When we finished we took a victory by eating food. It felt great to get the paper out of the way so we would not have to do it later. I could NOT wait until Sunday night to get that done. It would be so hard to rush it and it probably would end up really badly. We both needed to get a good grade so when we finally got to the paper we concentrated and actually tried our best.

Today in class (day 40)

Today in class we were told that we have a paper to do about the relationship between countries and the United States. It is due Monday, November 19th, and we are supposed to pick 2 countries and describe their relationship with the United States. It is important to know the countries that we are close with and that are our "friends", and the countries that are our enemies and that hate us. We got to have the choice whether to do it with a partner or work alone. I decided to work alone because I do not have to rely on someone else. Also, my social studies teacher told me last year that "If your partner messes up, it counts for them and YOU". I rather get points deducted for a mistake that I did and take the fault on it, than someone making a mistake and I get blamed too. Since Mr. Schick was an English teacher in the past it is important to keep in mind that grammar is also important, so is spelling. You can get all the information right, but your presentation could be miss used.

Today in class (day 39)

Today in class we had to research the past of 10 countries.

Afghanistan

Declared independence in August 19th 1919

This country served as a buffer between Roman Empire and the British until they won independence in 1919. They were the subjects under the British and Roman Empire. This country can be found in the middle east.  This country was established in 1747, and it is an Islamic republic. In 1973 they dropped being a democracy and became a Communist regime. Years later, the Taliban took over and ended the country's civil war and anarchy in 1996.  After the terrorist attacks on September 11th 2001, the Taliban was found to be hiding the mastermind; Osama Bin Laden. 3 years later, the first president Hamad Karzai took power in 2004.

France

There is no official date of independence.

In 486 Frankish tribes unified under the Merovingian kingship, August 10th 843: West Francia was created from the division of the Carolingian empire, July 17th 1789 was when the French monarchy was overthrown, September 22nd 1792 the first French republic was founded, October 4th 1958 was when the Fifth French Republic was established. They were not under any other leadership from another country. They only had kings and an empire.

Brazil

Declared independence in September 7th 1822 from Portugal. It is now a federal republic. While Brazil was under the rule of Portugal, they tried to make Brazil its own colony, depriving it's achievements since 1808. They refused to yield and Prince Pedro stood with his country to defend for independence. He was named  Brazil's first emperor on October 12th 1822. They ruled as the subjects of Portugal since 1500 until 1822.

Germany

They are many dates for Germany's independence. January 18th 1871 the German empire was unified. It was divided into 4 zones of occupation; UK, US, USSR, and France in 1945 after World War 2. The Federal Republic of Germany was set on May 23rd 1949 for Western Germany, and the German Democratic Republic was proclaimed on October 7th 1949. On  October 3rd 1990 western and eastern Germany were unified and all four powers were relinquished rights on March 15th 1991. Germany was never subjected under another country, it was just split up until 12 years ago.

Mexico

Declared Independence on September 16th 1810

The were colonized and conquered by Spain in the 16th century, they wanted independence because they were treated like slaves and abused. They stole Mexico's treasures and they didn't want to obey a king.  Mexico is also the cite for many advanced  Amerindian civilizations, including Aztec, Olmec, Toltec, Maya, and more. They were subjected under Spain for at least 2 or 3 centuries.

Venezuela

Declared Independence on July 5th 1811

They fought in the American revolution and the France revolution they then declared independence. This started the Venezuelan War for Independence. They wanted to declare independence from Spain, which they were under control since 1522. Hugo Chavez has been president of Venezuela since 1999. Venezuela's official country name is Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela.

Saudi Arabia

Declared Independence on September 23rd 1932

Saudi Arabia is the home of Islam and the most important places of Islam, including Mecca and Medina. Abdul-Aziz bin Saud started a conquest to take over Saudi Arabia, initially creating it in 1932. It was never conquered by another country because it is a relatively new country itself. It is a monarchy and has Abdul as it's king.

India

Declared Independence on August 15th 1947

India is one of the oldest countries, being established since 1500 B.C.  Turks and Afghans invaded India in the 10th and 11th century. They established Delhi Sultanate. In the 16th century the Mughal dynasty ruled India for more than 3 centuries. By the 19th century Great Britain became the dominant power over India. They led a non violent resistance to Britain rules that later led to their independence. They were ruled by Great Britain in the 19th century until 1947.

Iran

Declared Independence on April 1st 1979

It was known as Persia until 1935, it became a Republic in 1979 after the monarchy was overthrown.  The king was forced into exile or "kicked out of the country".  Iran was never overpowered by another country, they just were ruled by a monarchy.

United Kingdom

This country has played a leading role in developing parliamentary democracy. The British Empire in the 19th century spread over 1 out of 4 of the earth's surface. It declared independence in April 12th 1927.  On that date the Royal and Parliamentary Titles Acts establishes current name of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.  They were never under anyone's rule, they instead took over other countries, including the United States.

Today in class (day 38)

Today in class we went over the test that we took last Friday. I got 9 wrong. The front I just mixed up Iran and Israel up. On the back Hu Jintao will be replaced as China's leader in the next week or two, not Pranab Mukherjee. Hugo Chavez runs a country that is just over 1,000 miles from Florida and sells the U.S a lot of oil, not Enrique Pena Nieto. Pranab Mukherjee used to teach a political science course and has written five books, not Hugo Chavez. Angela Merkel is the fourth most powerful person in the world, largely due to her country's economic strength in the European Union, not Hu Jintao. Also since I got Iran and Israel wrong on the front, I got the letters wrong on the back. Mahmoud Ahmadinejad wants to order a nuclear strike against Israel and Benjamin Netanyahu wants to order a nuclear strike against Iran.

Today in class (day 37)

Today in class we took a test on the world leaders. It was "open blog" and we could look at our old blog posts to help us with it. I did fairly well on it, besides the facts on leaders. It was hard to retain because even though we went over some of them in class, it is sometimes hard to hear people with others talking a lot. What also did not help me was that I got the wrong leaders for Iran and Israel on my blog and I could not figure out which one of them was which. I later figured out that Iran's leader is Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and Israel's leader is Benjamin Netanyahu. They both do not like each other and are trying to get rid of each other. It is hard to understand why countries so close to each other dislike each other very much. Also Iran is near Afghanistan and Saudi Arabia. Why doesn't Iran want to destroy them with a bomb? It is hard to understand why countries that are so close to each other hate each other so much. It would be as if America and Canada went to war, or America and Mexico. Why such close countries start such an awful was? Would it be because of oil or money? Maybe even religion, but a war is not necessary over differences. Just as other countries may run people of of the country over differences, it is not necessary. It would be if I ran someone out of my house for having black hair, when I only allow blond hair. Weird, right?

Today in class (day 36)

Today in class we continued to go over the importance of other world leaders. We learned more information and I took more notes on some things that I left out. Such as the Taliban was in charge before Hamad Karzi was in Afghanistan. The Taliban was active from 1996 until 2001. Also the queen of England can fluently speak French. This means that she can communicate with other countries. She has also been in power for over 60 years and she has been in power for the longest compared to everyone in power right now. Lastly, David Cameron got a degree in philosophy, politics, and economics. It is essentially to have a leader like this. They have an education on what to do with a country and have been experienced. Since the election was last night, we now know the president of the United States, Barrack Obama! Two facts about his Obama's leader skills is that he found and killed Osama Bin Laden, a terrorist who cause 9-11. Another fact is that he was raised by his grandparents.

Today in class (day 35)

Today in class we went over the leaders of the countries and the importance of them. Already having some background information on the leaders of different countries, we took what we learned and combined it together. I learned new information on the other leaders. Such as the leader of Brazil, was in jail before she made president. She was tortured and hung from her hands and legs. I also learned that the leader of India was named the best financial leader in Asia in 2010. This is great characteristic to have because you can lead your country better financially. We are in a global recession, and there is a great way to get out of it by having a great leader. Another great financial leader is Hu Jintao, he has led China into having the greatest economy in the world. The leader of Israel won a noble peace prize in 1994 too. We also learned a new word today. It is coup d'etat, which means a sudden and decisive change of government illegally or by force. This means that if someone commits coup d'etat, they will go to jail for many years.

Today in class (day 34)

Today in class we have to do facts for presidents.

President- Elect Enrique Pena Nieto= 46 year old former governor of the state of Mexico, which is the richest of the states in Mexico, and he is the leader member rof the PRI which was kicke doubt of power in 2000 but will return this year because he is now president.

Prime minister David Cameron= he faced the problem of spending over 1.3 trillion on Europeans Union's and is viewed as politically unwise.

President Dilma Rousseff= she is the first woman president and has made great progress for Brazil by economic corporation

Today in class (day 33)

Today in class, I came in late so I missed part of class. We went over our test and I got a few answers wrong. Apparently somebody got "Jesus is the main idol for Christianity" wrong. ): I did not, but only one person did. We mostly went over the answers in class. It was a shortened class because we had a preview of the play. I was not able to watch the play because I was late. I came in late because I over slept. ): I woke up around 9:00 in the morning! I came to school around 10:00. Even though I disliked being late for school, it felt really good to sleep in. Ever since the storm, my schedule has been mixed up. I though Friday was Tuesday and Thursday was Monday! I really hope the people who were effected by the storm are all ok now. My friend Sam's favorite rollercoaster is now in the Atlantic Ocean! Holy poop! It is almost 12 o clock at night and I am tired): Wellllll good night!

Today in class (day 30)

Today in class we came up with some questions that we could add to the quiz. They included "What 2 groups are Islams divided into?" The answer would be the Shia and the Shiites. "What are the 3 Arabic religions?" The answer would be Christianity, Islam, and Judaism. "What religion is the 8 fold path and the 4 noble truths related?" The answer is Buddhism. A few questions unrelated to religion were " Did the Europeans conquer America?" The answer is yes, they did. Back on the topic of religion, "Who discriminated the Christians until God came to him?" The answer is Paul or Saw. "What percentage of India practices Hinduism?" The answer is 80 percent of India practices India. "Where was the birthplace of Muhammad" The answer is Mecca. "How many people in the world practice no religion?" The answer is 1 billion people. Lastly, "What is Buddha's other name?" The answer is Siddhartha. On the test we also need to know about the vikings, Columbus, and the Native Americans. We also need to keep in mind about the geographical distribution of the religions.

Today in class (day 29)

Today in class we continued to learn about the 5 key religions. We learned that Hinduism does not have 1 key God. Their god takes many different forms, such as in trees and in nature..etc. 80% of India practices Hinduism, and it started in India. Buddhism practices the 8 noble truths, which is just a way that people who practice that religion should live their life. One of the most longest living religions is Judaism. it has 13 million people practicing it today, and it believes in one god. Judaism believes in the same God as Christianity and Muslims. It started in Jerusalem and so did Christianity. Judaism has been whipped out due to the Holocaust. It killed over 6 million Jews! In Buddhism, they do not believe in a heaven and they believe in Siddhartha. Instead of being the overly fat person that he is considered to be, he was actually really skinny due to his fasting for 40 days. In Hinduism, there is no true founder. It is great that we have this opportunity to learn about religion and widen our intellectual capacity.

Today in class (day 28)

Today in class we took more notes and expanded are learning. We learned that Muhammad changed the religion of Christianity. He took the basic ideas and said what most of the Christians were doing wrong. We also learned that some people who practice a religion, take it too far. They are considered "extremists". They take their religion to a whole different level. Instead of following their holy books rules and laws, they like to SHOVE IT down on other people. Such as the Muslims bombed the World Trade Center because America "ruined their culture". Another example of extremists is when Christians bombed an abortion center. In my opinion there is no point of doing such extreme actions because of YOUR certain religion. In another case, Gays are also discriminated because of OTHERS religions. People are backing up being against gay marriage because it is against THEIR religion. It is unfair and undignified to do this to other people. It is a persons DECISION to get an abortion, you should not shove your religion just to "prove a point". If someone LOVES someone they should be able to marry them. Not even be considered a married couple just because of another's RELIGION. This is unfair and inhumane. People have the right to do what they want, we should not limit that because of another's religion. It is very irritating to see all over the world that people are being discriminated just because of another's religion. I believe that people should be able to have a choice to do what they want. They are reasonable laws though, such as "shall not kill". WHICH IS REASONBLE
RANT OVER

Today in class (day 27)

Today in class we took more notes. We took notes that extended our learning about ethnic heritage. Last time we took notes we learned about Yugoslavia and how it could not be country because of its diverse ethnic heritage. The other heritages did not get along and finally ending to a bloody war. Today we learned that in the countries of Rwanda and Burundie in Africa, 2 ethnic groups the Hutu and Tutsi are rivals. The Hutus are dominate in one part and the Tutis are in the other. They persecute the Hutus. This has led led to almost constant war between the groups between the group. This could led to a bigger war that could consist of other countries getting involved. The United States and switzerland have peacefully merged multiple ethnic groups in their countries. Both countries have wide variety of ethnic culture and there is no constant war between them. The United States is considered to be a "tossed salad" because of its large variety of ethnicities. In other countries however such as Korea and Japan, they have primarily one ethnic group. There is no migration and one main ethnic heritage. An example of cultural characteristics is mainly religion. Religion can be both a unifying and disunifying force. Other ethnic groups could be bounded by the same religion, or be disputed against difference between their religion. The main 5 religions are Hinduism, Buddhism, Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. We also extended upon the concept of Christianity. We learned that back when Christainity was being created, it was considered a crime. To preach it or even practice Christianity. Also, if it was not for Paul, Christianity would have slowly faded. Instead, Paul spread the word of God.

Today in class (day 26)

Today in class we looked up religions. Mr.Schick was not there and Mr. Perry was our substitute. Christianity was founded in 41 A.D in Jerusalem. It is a monotheistic and the holy book is the bible. It has over 2.1 billion followers and the main idol is Jesus Christ. The geographical concentration is North and South America, South Africa, Northern Asia, and Australia. In 632 A.D is when Islam was founded. It was also founded in Mecca and it is monotheistic. The holy book is the Koran and it has over 1.67 billion followers. The main idol is Allah, which is another word for God. The geographical concentration is Africa, and Middle East. In the 4 or 5 century B.C is when Buddhism was created. In North eastern Asia is where this religion was founded. It is polytheistic and the holy book is named the Tipitaka. It has over 360 million followrs and the main idol is the Buddah. The geographical concentration for this religion is China, Japan, Korea, and Southeast Asia. Hinduism was created around 1500-500 B.C.E in Northern India. It is monotheistic and the holy book is called the Holemanom. It has 860 million followers and there are many religious "idols". Its geographical concentration is mostly India. The oldest know religion is called Judaism, dating back to 2000 B.C in Isarel. It is monotheistic and the holy book is named the Torah, or also known as the Old testament in the Christian bible. It has over 14,549,000 followers, and the main religious is God. The geographical concentration is made up of Africa,Asia, Europe, Latin America, Northern America, and Oceania. Those are the notes I took on religions. (:

Today in class (day 25)

Today in class we took notes and learned new terms. We learned about Canada, language, religion, and ethnic heritage. These are the notes I took! Cultural Characteristics consists the parts of a group's everyday life. It also includes the ideas and themes which the group will teach to all members. This means that things people do everyday and the ideas and themes people are taught make up cultural characteristics. These same characteristics can also link or divide a region. Examples of these characteristics would be language, religion, and ethnic heritage. An example of language is how Arabic unites the Arab world. Also how Spanish unites the Hispanic world. A vocab word we learned today was bilingual. Bilingual means that a nation has 2 official languages. A country that is bilingual would be Canada. Their official languages would be French and English. Today we also learned about ethnic heritage. In Yugoslavia, many ethnic groups were made into 1 country. When strong leadership died out, the different groups fought a very bloody civil war and now they all have separate countries. Some countries can not stand having different ethnic groups together as one. Such as Sudan. The Muslims and the Christians could not stand having to be together in the same country. They went to war which made all the boys leave their homes in southern Sudan. Other countries do not have different languages or ethnicity's in their country. A country like this would be North Korea. They do not let people in their country and do not let people out of their country. We learned many different vocab words today and learned more about our Culture unit! There are 82 days left of the year 2012! Oh my glob!

Today in class (day 24)

Today in class we shared other power points and got to learn more about the Native Americans and Christopher Columbus. My blog will be what I learned about Christopher Columbus. He came to America in 1492! "Christopher Columbus sailed the ocean blue in 14 hundred 92!" Christopher got to America by 3 ships, the Pinta, Santa Maria, Nina. When the 3 ships landed in America, there were already settlers in America. There were about 20 to 30 Native Americans. Nobody really knows exactly where Christopher Columbus first landed in America. They Europeans stayed in America forever really! They had to fight off the Native Americans for the land, to conquer America! The Europeans did not take very good care of the land. They cut down trees and other natural resources. They nearly destroyed the Native Americans. There were many disputes against the Europeans and the Native Americans. Christopher Columbus was originally looking for Indiana, but found America. He was not essentially sent to find America. Once he found it though, he told many of the people back home. He sent more ships to conquer America. On a side note, I looked up Leif Erickson day and found out it was TODAY! So HAPPY LEIF ERICKSON DAY!

Today in class (day 23)

Today in class we went over the test and did a project. We went over the problems on the test and asked questions that we had. After we finished that, we did a project. We got in a groups of 6 or 7 and we had to choose between vikings, native Americans, or Christopher Columbus. My group did Vikings! THEY ARE AWESOME. We had several questions which we had to answer. The vikings arrived in America in 1000 A.D. The first viking to go to America was Leif Erickson. They got to America by ship, they were "Long ships". There were 3 types of long ships: Snekke,Drekkar, and Skeid. The ships were long and narrow, and they had room for about 18 men to row, they also had sails. When the vikings arrived to America, the Native Americans already lived on the land. The vikings did not really land in America, they landed in Greenland. They left though because the climate became harsh. When they arrived though, it was rich and full of crops. The vikings also landed in Canada. The vikings did not fight and conquer the Americas, although they established a colony in North America. It did not last a very long time, they abandoned it because of conflict with the natives. The vikings took very good care of the land, and they grew grape orchids. They lived off the land by hunting animals and farmed their land. The vikings also used many natural resources to build their homes. The items they used were turf and some used wood, they grew wheat barley and rye. Lastly the vikings were not sent by anyone to find America. Happy Monday and LEIF ERICKSON DAY.

Today in class (day 22)

Today in class we took a test on the movie "God Grew Tired Of Us". Before we took the test we had time to check over our notes. I did for a few minutes, then I got distracted and talk to people. I seriously get so distracted its crazy. I'm pretty sure that is a disorder or something. I do not even know. The test was not very hard at all. Except the fact that we had to spell words right. I am horrible at spelling. I seriously have no life. The test though was very easy. After I was done I had to be quiet until everyone finished the test. Once every one was done we talked about the test. It was really funny because Damon asked if we had to capitalize and answer to the test. We were not supposed to talk about the answers. We still did though. :) Class is always fun, and I am sitting here on a Saturday night doing nothing. I am watching Jersey Shore. Watching people on TV have fun while you're doing homework. Oh. Well I am still cool I guess.

Today in class (day 21)

Today in class we came up with ways to help sub-Saharan nations. One way we came up with was to walk up on the side of the road. We would wear t-shirts and hold up signs. Our main goal is to get awareness that there is a problem. One issue that nations in trouble face is that many other developed nations do not know about their issues. Such as the United States did not know that Sudan was having an out breaking war. It lead to many deaths, such as being eaten, starving to death, and not being able to go on any more. Many women that stayed in Sudan were raped. This is a very big issue, even though we face issues such as these in the United States, it is a bigger issue in Sudan and many other African nations. Another way to get the word out is to go to other schools and attempt to raise money. We can help kids get out of refugee camps and go to school by an organization. If we go to other schools and get them to raise money and help us, maybe we could help more Sudan and other African countries. We could visit high schools near by, such as Harford Tech, C Milton, Bel-Air. Also we could go to near by middle schools such as Southampton, St. Margret. Maybe even elementary schools such as Hickory, and St. Margret. The more ways we get our word out, the closer we will be to helping Sudan.

Tuesday, October 2, 2012

Today in class (day 20)

Today in class we added links to websites where we could possibly help Sudan. We go into groups and came up with a website that would help. My group came up with Mercy Corps. In the beginning though we had trouble with the open document. Many people wrote unrelated things and kept deleting things. I thought it was funny though, because everyone was getting angry. Other groups came up with many great websites though. Such as one group came up with Red Cross. Red cross is an organization where they help people with war, natural disaster, and poverty. This would help Sudan and it's aftermath because of the wars. Another group came up with lostboysus.org This organization gives people an opportunity to sponsor children so that they may leave a refugee camp and go to a boarding school in Kenya. Lastly another group came up with an organization called Women for Women. Which is about giving food and water for the women stuck in Sudan. All of these organizations could possibly help Sudan. Another way we could help is by getting the word out about Sudan. The more people we tell, the more others are award of what is happening.

Today in class (day 19)

Today in class we finished the movie "God grew tired of us." In my opinion I think that the movie was very heart breaking but touching. It showed a dangerous journey of lost boys who were kicked out of their country because of war. They spent 10 years at a refugee camp and after those 10 years some were chosen to go to the United States. You get to see 3 of the boy's journey to making a difference in their life and in the home the left. Towards the end you get to see the life that they made for themselves. Panther went back to Africa and got married to his girlfriends. John Bull was re united with his mom and continues to send money to Sudan. Mr. Schick asked us what we should do as a Freshman class to help Sudan. My idea is to go to a refugee camp and give them entertainment, food, water, etc. It would take them away from their boredom and hunger and suffering. We could change some one's day. During the movie they said that many men thought of killing themselves. If we could change some one's day and mood for just one day, maybe we could change their life. I believe that we could make their day more positive and happier. I think that we should really visit a refugee camp. :)(:

Today in class (day 18)

Today in class we continued watching the "God grew tired of us" movie. It was very interesting to see the boys have their own jobs. They took on so many different jobs that they did not have enough time to even see each other. I think that is very sad because even when they came to the new world they were excited to spend it with their friends, when in reality they never get to see them. They explained that it is hard to wake up at 7 in the morning and go to bed around 1 or 2 in the morning. As much as they want to make a living in the United States it is hard because all they can get is minimum wage. One of the boys found out that his family was still alive and they had to take on another job, and not go to school to help their family. I feel that the lost boys are very faithful and do not live and forget. They do what is needed to be done and help the people they left behind. Also one of the boys had to move out so that they could go to college. Life has change dramatically for the boys. They are trying their best to make the best of it.

Today in class (day 17)

Today in class we continued to watch the video "God grew tired of us". We were up to the part where 3 or the men have gotten to America. When they got off the plane, they were confused about the escalator and the food they received on the plane. They didn't know that you are not supposed to eat butter and mayonnaise by its self. When they got to their home, they had assistance to their new life. They were introduced to chips, lights, shower, fridge, etc. They never experience this stuff before. Once they come to America, they have 3 months to adjust, get a job and pay for their air travel. These three men have come a long way to get here. They are going to make something of themselves and help the people they left behind. They haven't forgotten what they left behind them, they are trying to change it. They still wonder about where there parents are and how their friends are doing. Their journey isn't over, they are striving to help people in Kenya. They want to make a difference and help the people they traveled for over 5 years with. Their journey isn't over, it has just begun.

Today in class (day 16)

Today in class we went over the test that we took on Monday. I got an 82 on it. I got only seven problems wrong. The main gathering place for Greece was the agora, NOT the arete. A message to Garcia was written after the Spanish-American war NOT World War 2. Rowan was asked to bring a message to Garcia NOT a clerk in Elbert Hubbard's office. On the date 508 B.C the Greeks revolted against their leaders, it DOES NOT mark the beginning of the Peloponnese War. Canada has the highest Net Migration Rate NOT the United States. Nigeria is a sub- Saharan nation NOT India. The United States produce more oil than any nation on Earth, NOT Italy. Those are all the problems I got wrong. ): I dislike tests! They make me sad. ): Well today was a great day and Happy Tuesday!

Today in class (day 15)

Today in class we took a test. It was a very interesting test. Some of the questions I didn't even know. I was like WHAT IS THIS STUFF! We watched a video afterwords. It was about how a war broke out in a country in Africa. A group of boys and men had to walk for over 5 years straight to safety. They started out with 27,000 boys and men and ended up with 12,000! That means that over 15,000 men and boys died. The cause of their death was most likely from starvation, from being attacked by wild animals, and being to weak to go on. When they go to safety, most were very hungry and close to dying. They were fed and given and education. They learned English and other important things. Once they finished school, they were still stuck. They couldn't leave where they were. For 10 years they were stuck there. Some people were designated to the United States. That is where we stopped!  :D

Happy Monday!

Today in class (day 14)

Today in class, Mr. Shcik made us present our powerpoints. I WENT 2ND!!! But first India went first. We had to finish their presentation because they didn't finish. It was very interesting learning about different countries. I also like cats. My country was Indonesia. It was funny because India went first THEN Indonesia! Hehehehe get it..India..Indonesia. I'm highlarious. MY COUNTRY WAS BY FAR THE BESTEST! I had Patrick Luft in my group. He's my best friend. I'm on his bowling team!!! I forget what happened in class. It's late at night and I'm hungry. Today was the first day of Autumn! It was really warm though, and it rained. I had a party today! Only 5 people came. I have no friends. ): That is besides the point. I really want food); IM SO LONLEY! I'm watching Friends though, so I feel better. Ok, well this is goodnight. NIGHT

Today in class (day 13)

Today in class all we did was present our power points. We learned that Italy is a very developed country. It has a very large population and the country uses a lot of oil. They use a lot of electricity to withstand their large population. They are ranked 2 on the oil production compared to the world. They have over a million people. They barley increase in their population and they are ranked 157 compared to the world. Their population ranks 23 compared to the world. We also learned about Nigeria. Nigeria has over a 170 million people in their country. Their net migration rate is a negative number. This means more people are leaving than coming in. Their population is ranked 7 compared to the world. One last country we learned about was India. India has over a billion people currently in their country. This means their population is overcrowding the country. Compared to the world their population is ranked 2. Their net migration rate is an also a negative number which means more people are leaving the country than coming in it. There is a possibility that people are leaving due to the fact that it is over populated and very crowded.

Today in class (day 12)

Today in class, Mr. Schick made us do a class project. We had to do a power point on Google docks.  That was interesting because I usually do my power points on Microsoft office. I think it is convenient to do stuff online so that you will never loose it. If you lost all of your documents that would be bad considering that our documents on our school computer are important. If we lost all of them we would get very bad grades and be sad. For the project we did Indonesia. Indonesia is a developing country and more people are leaving the country than going to it. This shows that Indonesia is a poor country and cannot withstand a substantial population. I had to look up the birth rate and the death rate. The birth rate is 17.76, compared to the world that is ranked 105. That is very low compared to the rest of the world. The death rate is 6.28 which is very low compared to the world to. They are ranked 156 compared to the world. That means that very low people die in this country. Yayyyy Indonesia

Today in class (day 11)

Today in class Mr. Schick made us take boring notes. It wasn't that interesting. What was interesting though is that most women live longer than men. This is true because most men do dangerous jobs. Most men are in the army, firefighters, police, etc. Women once they have kids usually stay home and take care of them. They make food for the family and take care of the kids. Sure enough, when the kids get older they won't need their mom around twenty-four/seven. So they mom goes back to work. Since the woman is a little older than she was before, she may take an easier job. Than go into the army and become a firefighter. In China, men are considered more important. They think this way because men take over the business. Where women marry men with a nice business. If they had a daughter, they usually gave them up for adoption. Now, they're more men in china and not enough women to marry. The population has decreased in China (or stayed the same) by only having 1 child. This would keep the population under control and not out of hand. Also, again they're not a lot of women to marry the men. It would be very hard to find a spouse. I thought it was interesting that we only got to 1 billion people in the 1800's. After 10,000+ years that we existed, we didn't have a billion people until 1800! Today we are up to 7 billion people and counting. In the future we might over populate whihc could lead to some issues in the future. Then again, they're a lot of diseases that have not been cured which may never be cured. They also, will never be a cure for death.

Today in class (day 10)

Today in class Mr. Schick talked about some of the statistics in the video we watched a few days ago. First we talked about the statistic "1 out of 8 married couples met online". We said that it would be weird to meet someone online. You wouldn't know who they really were. They could be all nice and sweet, but in reality they secretly want to kill you. I feel like many deaths would be caused by internet dating. People can easily trick you into thinking they're all great and wonderful. It's hard to trust people today. You don't know who you're talking on the internet. We also talked about how weird people add you on Facebook and try to message you. I find this very weird that people from other countries try to talk to you and you don't know who they even are! Another statistic we talked about was China will soon be the #1 English speaking country. This is odd because most people would think the United States would be #1. Since we have a very diverse country, many different languages are spoken. People want to stop immigration and just have all american people. Our culture is very diverse and it is changing everyday. That is what happened today in class.(:

Today in class (day 9)

Today in class Mr. Schick continued to go over the questions we finished a few days ago. During this process, we we learned more statics about the world today. Such as they're 7,021,836,029 people in the world. In the future we will have more and more people which may lead to some problems. Such as, we could have a less supply of fresh water and food. This could to lead to having more issues and more deaths. We also watched a video called "Did you know 3.0". This video was mostly made of statistics of the world today. One thing that was very interesting to me was "1 out of 8 couples married met online" This is a very interesting statistic that shows technology is a big part of our lives. Many people have used the Internet as a resource to make something of themselves. Such as becoming a singer, dance, artist, etc. Now people are using it to meet people and fall in love. The Internet hasn't been around for over 30 years and it has really changed the world. We find information by the Internet and it has really changed the world. Even though the Internet is a good thing, it can also be a bad thing. Child predators can seek out teenagers over a "chat room" This tool may be used for good, or bad. Another interesting fact I learned from the video was "If Facebook was a country it would be 3 (behind China and India)" This means that they're are more people on Facebook then the United States! This really shows are 1 website can become widely popular! It also means never underestimate your self. Mark Zuckerburg had passion and determination and the result of it was a very popular website. Not only is it popular in America but it's in over 70 languages! A threat that Facebook has is bullying. A big trend is "cyber bullying" and because Facebook is very popular it also means there is a more chance to get bullied. Just by a simple message someones day could instantly ruined. People also take their own lives because of cyber bullying. The Internet is a useful source, but it also can be a big threat.

Today in class (day 8)

TODAY in class Mr. Schick went over the questions that we had to do the other night. In doing this, we got a little sidetracked. Besides an elephant eating half the school, we talked about 9-11 and its importance. September 11th 2001 was a very tragic day. The United States went under a terrorist attack and killed over 2,000 people. At the time, I was only in pre- school and do not remember anything that happened that day. Mr. Schick explained that even students in his class had lost someone they loved. A girl lost her father, and another girl's uncle went missing. Most people loose their parents by sickness, heart attacks, and car crashes. That girl had to say "My dad died by a terrorist attack" How terrible would that be? Not that long ago, we killed the man who started the terriest attack, Osma Bin Ladin. He was believed to be hidden in Pakistan, which means Pakistan wasn't doing there job by informing where the terrorists were hidden! This is only a theory though, it hasn't been proven yet. Besides the heavy attmosphere of the conversation of 9-11, we also threw shoes. Yay for no shoes! Well, that is what happened in class today. It was very interesting to learn new knowledge about such a heavy topic in America. Thank you all the firemen and policemen! Rest in peace 9-11 victims.

(Also Mr. Schick I had trouble with blogging my last post because I thought it postesd when it did not. You told me to remind you and that is what I am doing. kbye)

Today in class (day 6)

In class today Mr. Schick made us take notes on taking notes. He explained to us that in college they are not going to tell you what you have to write down. Instead, they are going to stand up in the front of the room and just teach. It is important in college to take notes because garneted you will not remember everything that the teacher had said. If you do not take notes you are most likely to fail. When you are taking notes, you do not have to write in complete sentences or correct spelling. Instead you use little fragments to help you keep up with the teacher. This is essential because the longer you take to write, the farther you will be behind. In college instead of taking notes, you can just take a tape recorder and you have the whole lecture recorded! For high school though, it is important to know how to take notes because some teachers will just lecture the whole class. Taking notes can be easy, as long as you know how to!

Today in class (day 5)

Today in class Mr. Schick did an experiment. He told us not to always trust a website. By doing this, we went to a list of links and examined each and every one of them. Looking for the ones that weren’t reliable was very hard. You have to look for very numerous details. Such has, if it mainly an opinion and its layout. An opinion is someone’s own thoughts and actions. Many people have different opinions. Such as one person may like soup while another person may not. It is just a matter of how people think and what they like. Another thing to tell if a website is a bad source is by the layout. The layout shows if it was by a company or a “sweaty man in his basement”. If it is all nice and from a familiar company, it is most likely a reliable source and you can get your information. If it is messy and has incorrect grammar it is most likely a very reliable source. That is what happened in class today

Essay #1

The true deffinition of arete is making up good character. In my mind, arete means doing good for your self and others. Socrates did this by going against what he was told and defining the world better. Just by asking a few simple questions can you get into the mind of another. It goes deeper into just talking to a stranger and it becomes talking to a friend. His method helped puting  people who did horrible in crimes in jail. Instead of being told what to do and not asking questions, people today would just be pushed around and not do anything. Instead, they think for themselves believe their own beliefs. Ancient Greece also performed an action of arete. They helped moved the world, even today. If it wasn't for Ancient Greece we would still be ruled by a monarcy. Instead, we are ruled by a republic and choose our own president. Both Ancienct Greece and Socrates have shown a great deal of arete. They have done this by showing people to choose who to be and feel free to think for themselves.

Essay #3

During the next four years I am attending John Carroll I would like to make something of myself. Also I would love to leave an imprint on someone’s life. For the most part, I want to get good grades and do my best. I want to get in a good college so I can get a fantastic job. I want to change the world and the first step of that is a good education. Trying my hardest in school is the only way to succeed. I also would love to make new friends and meet new people. I want to make a difference in a person’s life and show them the better things in the world. Another thing I want to do is get involved. One way to change a community is to get involved. I currently volunteer at a church to help special needs adult and it is a life changing experience. Just connecting to different lives and learning from their day to day life. I want to achieve a lot at John Carroll. The next four years will have a great change in my character and the way I think about life.

Essay #2

It has been years since Elbert Hubbard and Socrates have been on this earth. If they time traveled to the year 2012 they would be in for a big surprise. Socrates would be very pleased with the way things are now.  His idea of questioning everything still exists today. During trials, lawyers find out information by asking many questions and keeping the witness on their toes. Socrates would also be pleased that people are thinking for themselves. Thousands of years ago, people didn’t think for themselves. Instead they were told what to do and didn’t ask any questions. If they went against what they were told, they were sentenced to death. Today, that people do as they please and are not prosecuted. Unlike Socrates, Elbert would be furious with life today. His essay “A message to Garcia” is about how people rarely do as they are told and didn’t ask question. Instead they are lazy and do not do as they are told. People, even today are still like this. Instead of being asked to do a task, they would put it off and procrastinate.  This is a big problem with teenagers because they is “always something better to do” and decide not to do it. They both will have different outlooks on the world today.

Today in class (day 4)

Today in class Mr. Schick explained terms in class. Arete means making up good character. Such as it was very arete to vote for a ruler. If you didn't take your duty and not vote, you were considered an "idiot". Not in the stupid sense, but that you were not during as you were expected and not doing your part as a citizen. If you wanted to vote, you would go to the agora. Which was a place in ancient Greece where they would vote, deal with politics, and other issues. A place in Greece was called a polis, which is translated into city-state. A man who changed the whole world was an acienct philosopher named Socrates. He came up with the theory to ask question after question and become in sync with another person's thoughts. This method is used many times in the court room. Socrates death has showed how strong he was about his beliefs. As a part of his method, Socrates would ask many citizens "why", such as "Why do you believe in the gods?" As this made the town furious, he was put in jail and put on a trial. They said as long as he apologizes he would be free. Instead of apologizing, he told them instead of prosecuting him, they should be thanking him. The jury decided he was guilty and was sentenced to death. He died a very fast but painful death. The year of 508 B.C started a restart of socitey. Instead of having a monacry, a republican was created. Instead of having a king and queen they have a president and the people get to choose who they pick for their goverment. That, is what we talked about in class today.

Today in class (day3)

Today in class Mr. Schick attempted to get the new people connected to blogger. In this process many people just talked. The trouble of getting connected to the blogs made me relize how much I wanted food. In the end, don't we all want food? It is the essential of life. Another thing I want in life is internet. You can't do much without it. Imagine your life, without internet. They say that back in the stone ages they had some type of internet. Instead of ipads or ipods, they had istones and could connect internet via rocks. Imagine trying to get internet throught rocks! Thats hard! If we didn't have internet the new kids couldn't hook up to blogger. Which means we would have done something constructive! Which is gross, like people. I wonder what it would be like to be a cat. Meowing everywhere and being fluffy. Then again gross people touch you and pet you. I went to hershey park a few weeks ago and saw a stray kitty. It was so adorable. Then it rained, SADFACE. Class today was very laid back. When I came home from school I played Slender. It is such a scary game! I pee myself everytime! Acctually I just end up going to the bathroom scared. I wonder what it would be like to play Slender during class. That would be interesting. Especially in Mr. Schick's class! Class was boring, except when a giant dinosaur came and killed everyone. Except me of course.:) That dinosaur tore Mr. Schick in half! Take that 1,000 ways to die! Now you have to be 1,001 ways to die! Dying from a giant dinosaur! Well I have to take a shower. Tootalooo!

Today in class... (day2)

Today in class Mr. Schick read us an essay from 1899. It stated about a man was sent from his boss to send a letter to major Garcia. What was interesting about this task was that no one knew where Garcia was. He was somewhere deep in Cuba. Instead of asking many questions and wondering as any other man would do, he just left. Without any interegating the man left and did what he was told. Later, the author states that people (even back then) are not like that anymore. They make excuses and put things off. He also states that people do not even work together. They rather have someone else do it instead of them. In a time where we need to "send a letter to Garcia" we fail to do such that. People are not as dependent as they used to be. They are lazy and only do what they are told when they are pushed to do it. When a person is asked to do a task, and no one is watching them they will "goof off" and not do the task. Many people strive to find the man who is dependent and will do a task without asking any questions. Most of the population lack this key in responsiblity and choose the easy and lazy path. In the end, the essay is a message to people that they should be dependent and unlazy and just do what they are told without asking questions. They should be dependable to be asked to "send a letter to Garcia"

My first day at John Carrol(:

My first day of John Carrol was interesting. When I walked in the door, a new world started. I saw some old and new people. I saw my old friends from elementary school. Re-uniting with them brought back old memories. Meeting all my teachers was also very interesting. Having my sister graduate from John Carrol makes going through this tranisition easier. Most of my freshman teachers she has already had! (Even you!:D) My sister (Nicole Green) has really helped me. She told me all the good teachers and how things work. So on the first day it was very easy to get around. But with her going away to college, I know I won't always have her around to help me with stuff. One thing interesting about my first day was the 3 floors. From going to the 1st floor, then 3rd, then 1st again really makes you have to rush to class. Another thing I enjoyed about John Carrol was the food. I just love lunch! My first day of highschool was very fun and a new experience. I can't wait to spend the rest of my four years at John Carrol!
